How can brand loyalty affect commercial real estate?

I'm curious to see hard numbers of how Macy's sales have been impacted since the name change went official. Working just down the street from the flagship Macy's (formerly Marshall Field's) store, it sure seems like they are still getting an exceptional amount of traffic, even if it is occasionally peppered with protesters. At least the protesters seem to situate themselves near a less-popular entrance on East Randolph, rather than the frontage on State Street. If I didn't know better, I'd almost think the protesters were a guerrilla marketing tactic by Macy's - after all, conflict draws a lot of PR.
